JAPANESE
Long ago, there
was nothing. An opaque, foggy realm was the skies, and smooth, nebulous
stones were the moons, but they had no planets to orbit. The stars were
dimmed and grey. So forth went this theme for millenia, when "lo!" A
being has come forth from the mist with the Plain of High Heaven! It is
the Ame-no-Nushi-no-Mikoto, "the Deity of the August Center of Heaven".
Takami-Musubi-no-Mikoto, the "High-August-Producing Wondrous Deity",
followed. "Kammi-Musubi-no-Mikoto" was the final Creating Deity.
The other random deities came forth and so did the Divine Beings, Izanami and Izanagi. They were given a spear, the "Ama-no-Nuboko", to stir the brine with. Izanami and Izanagi began to stir it, when they found it touched something. Bringing it upwards, they saw the single drop of water that fell from its tip became an island. Pleased with this conclusion, the deities married on this island and became parents of numerous islands. This story, the most detailed, relates to space because the two gods making islands and a chaos becoming the universe. It relates to most others because of the two gods creating the earth. It is an exceptional and unique story. |

When the earth
was still chaos and as nebulous as nebulous could get, from a canoe of
the heavens descended Glooscap, who was good, and Malsm, who was weak,
cruel, and had a fierce vendetta. These two gods set about creating
animals and plants from the dirt and water. One day, Glooscap was sick
of the doubtful creatures Malsm was arousing. Fed up with his attitude,
Glooscap killed him "for the greater good".
He shot four arrows then which became the Penobscot, Malisceet, Mi'kmaq and Passamquoddy people. He taught them to use resources wisely, then left with the setting sun. "Glooscap is still with us. He said when he left, 'If you ever really need me, come to seek me, and you will find me."" This story is similar to all the others, except the Native American, because of two deities formating the earth and creating living things. It relates to space due to the canoe falling from the sky. |
HELPING FOCUS: How Does This Help Us?
These stories can be helpful when it comes to looking into cultural
beliefs. They are accurate, entertaining, and since they are told in my
own words, they are copyright-free. They can be either to read for fun
or a pastime, or for a project such as a job, college, or education.
They help to keep cultures alive and are amusing. That is how they are
helpful.
"Now how did THIS get here?" |
RUSSIAN When the
earth was a nothing and all was opaque, a Cosmic Egg floated across the
space. Inside this egg was contained "Rod, the creator of mankind". Rod
broke through the egg and created the Mother Lada, goddess of love, and
Mother Earth, who descends to the earthly planet Rod has called Earth.
He then gives himself a son, Svarog, the man who had four heads "to see of the North, the South, the East, and the West".
Rod's breath is now the wind. His eye is the stars, his chest the Sun
and Moon. His tears are rain, his hair is grass, and - Mother Earth is
gone!
Svarog enlists a little grey duck to dive down to the water to retrieve Mother Earth. She goes down for a year, but says she cannot hold her breath for so long. She goes down again, and by her third attempt, she paddles towards Svarog, and she holds a leafy stick in her mouth. Svarog rolls the stick between his hands and calls upon the elements to evaporate the water. Mother Earth rises from the lake in which she was trapped. After that, Svarog then creates a snake that holds up the world. If it were to move, an earthquake would occur. This story is like no other. It is original, and the only thing relating it to others is that Rod and Svarog cooperated when they created the world. |
NATIVE AMERICAN
Long, long ago, there was a Golden Egg, containing Gaea, who was Mother
Earth, and Uranus, who was the god of the heavens. It flew across the
galaxy, until finally they broke out of the egg and flew down to earth.
This couple then forced a flood into the three underworld kingdoms. Changing Woman, a citizen of the underworld. had then reached land and gave birth to the Hero Twins, who were Monster Slayer and Child of the Waters. These two then accounted for most of the world's creation. This story is the shortest one, and it relates to space because of the Cosmic Egg and the Hero Twins creating the universe. It relates to others only because of the pairs (Gaea and Uranus, and the Hero Twins) of beings forming the Universe. |
