What a Fashion Designer Designing Everyday Clothes Goes Through vs. a Scientist Designing Space Suits
What
does a fashion designer go through when creating everyday clothes vs. a
scientist designing space suits? At some points of creating the
clothing it’s the same; at others it’s different. These three factors
are vital in creating them; Conditions; What the clothes have to go
through , Regulations; Rules to help make sure the product is the best
it can be, Testing; To see how the product actually performs and to get
feedback. Without those, the product would fall apart.
A
fashion designer has to consider all the conditions the clothes would
possibly go through. Considering the washer, the dryer, rain dirt,
food. The clothes have to be able to withstand all of those conditions.
If the clothes don’t, what are they worth? Consider this; If a company
were to design an exercise shirt for the average male man( 6’2”
210 lbs) and distribute it in Arizona, (average temp about 85 F), they
would have to factor in all of that information to make the product. If
they didn’t use that, where would they be and how would their product
work/come together?
When
creating a space suit, you have much more extreme conditions to work in
than a

designer. Here’s a few reasons why;
- theres no oxygen in space
- extreme temperatures
- constantly bombarded by UV (high energy solar radiation rays that are blocked on earth by the ozone layer) rays.
- terrible weather
- space
is like a vacuum, if someone was wearing normal clothes with a lungful
of oxygen, the air would expand and the lungs would burst
- The pressure is also so-so low that the blood drops below human body temperature, a condition that can kill in an instant space is filled with micro-meteors that can pierce an astronaut's suit
These are just a few of
the conditions scientists have to prepare a space suit for. It must be
hard for a scientist to work around all the conditions the suit will go
through.
Onto
regulations and requirements. There would be regulations for this
because otherwise, some unqualified person could go and design a space
suit that people think would work without even considering what may
happen. There are lots of regulations. Here are a few;
- Have a pressurized atmosphere
- Have sufficient oxygen supply
- Eliminate carbon dioxide (a harmful gas)
- Maintain a proper temperature despite of strenuous work and movement into and out of sunlit areas
- Protect from micrometeoroids (tiny meteors that could pierce the astronaut)
- Protect from radiation to some degree
- Enable clear vision
- Allow easy movement of the body inside the spacesuit
- Enable easy conversation with others such as ground controllers, other astronauts etc.
- Facilitate movement around the outside of the spacecraft
This is the minimum
of protection a space suit would need to have the astronaut survive in
space. Imagine how many other requirements there are. There are many requirements to make a space suit.
Regulations for clothing aren’t as important but still are important. Some of the regulations for clothes are ;
- flammability
- stitch strength
- fabric strength
- allover wearability
- Lead content and surface coating limits
Each
of those are important because the clothes will be going through
conditions where those will matter. If something goes through the wash
and dryer, they will need to have strong stitches and strong fabric to
keep the clothing item in one piece. Regulations are vital to uphold
quality.
Now for testing. Testing products is especially important for a space suit. Space suit testing is vital
as if something goes wrong when their testing it, they can easily fix
it but if they don’t test the product and something goes wrong, the
effect of it could be somebody dying or getting hurt as it would’ve
happened in space. Testing is how the scientists perfect their product,
or at least make it better. It is especially important because
somebodies life may be at risk.
For
testing everyday clothes, its a little different. There isn’t as much
pressure for the product to work out. As its not life threatening if it
goes wrong, its not as big a deal as a space suit going wrong. It still
is as important in another way though, as a customer may not shop at a
store as much if they start getting bad products. It‘s a way of getting
feedback from customers before the product goes into stores. It
helps to make the product better than it was. It’s like critique in
writing or what the editor does for a book.
Overall
a fashion designer (everyday clothes) and scientist (space suits)have
different jobs, but still have to go through some of the same things
when designing their products. I hope you enjoyed my report and learned
something about what people designing clothes and space suits have to
go through. Although they are different, both have importance. |
